It’s all about the food

If you really want to get to the heart of a country, then the best way is by discovering some local cuisine, but you need to know where to look. You need to seriously avoid anything that looks like it’s catering for the tourists, if the menu looks too familiar then you need to avoid it completely. Go off the beaten track, as the saying goes, and find some of the more hidden avenues that cater to the locals. If the menu looks different and unfamiliar, then you’re on to a winner. Also, avoid any chain restaurants, these might offer some local cuisine, but it’s targeted toward tourists; this is not where the locals will eat.

Stop worrying

Let your inhibitions go. While it’s essential to be mindful that you’re in a foreign country, and you might not be able to regain some personal items if they go missing, not everyone is out to get you. If you’re cagey or unsure, then people will pick up on that, making it harder to hold a decent conversation or to foster a burgeoning friendship. The moral of the story is, give people a chance, and you’ll find yourself looking more approachable.

Stay in a hostel

If you’re staying in a fancy hotel, then you’re not going to be mixing with other people. Hostels are a whole other story. While people who stay in hostels are keeping it as low-key and social as possible. Also, hostels offer group excursions where you can get to know your fellow travelers. While they may not be locals themselves, they may have a few tips and tricks themselves they can offer you, or perhaps they’ve been around a bit longer, and they can introduce you to some of their local pals.

If you learn a few key phrases then you will be on a better path to communicating with the people you want to get to know; you never know, they might offer to help with developing some of your language skills!
